I got into cosplay (costume play)
when my friend Alice asked to dress up with her
for a convention called Katsucon. She wanted to
go as an anime character and thought it would
be better in a group. Ever since then, I've dressed
up for every convention I attend. I say 'dress
up' because I don't necessarily wear costumes,
sometimes I wear my own fashions or 'closet concoctions',
i.e. throw something together from whatever I
already have.
Alice was right when she thought
a group was best. After my first con, I got my
friends to cosplay and then we ended up starting
a cosplay group. The group was called the Official
Unofficial Magna Carta and War of Genesis Cosplay
Group, or OUMGWGCG for short. Ridiculous? You
bet. The concept was to take designs from the
artist Hyung Tae Kim, who at the time was not
well known in America, and give them exposure
at the conventions we attended. Otakon was the
official OUWGMCCG meet up, and we would all spend
a day in the costumes of whichever character(s)
we chose to cosplay.
Most of the costumes you will see
below are from Hyung Tae Kim's character designs.
The OUWGMCCG is still active, just not as active
as we once were. (Hyung Tae Kim's art is well
known in America now, so our main purpose for
cosplaying his designs is gone.)
